What is a tooth-colored filling?

A dental filling repairs a cavity by replacing the decayed part of the tooth, and the tooth-colored fillings we place at our Edmonds office do it with composite resin: a durable material that bonds directly to the tooth and matches its color. What’s the difference between white and silver fillings?

Most patients today receive composite (tooth-colored) fillings. Silver amalgam fillings are placed less often now, but you may have older ones. Here’s how they compare:

Appearance. Composite matches your tooth color. Amalgam is silver and visible, especially toward the front of the mouth.

Tooth preservation. Composite bonds chemically to the tooth, so the cavity preparation can be smaller. Amalgam needs a slightly larger preparation to hold in place mechanically.

Durability. Both materials are durable. Amalgam has a longer track record in high-pressure back-molar positions, and modern composites have closed most of that gap.

Old silver fillings. Silver fillings that are cracked, leaking, or failing should be replaced; ones still in good condition can stay right where they are. How long do fillings last?

Composite fillings typically last 7 to 10 years, and many go well beyond that with good care.
