What to do right now

1 Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white, chewing part), never by the root.
2 Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty. Don’t scrub it and don’t use soap.
3 Try to place it back in the socket if you can. Bite down gently on gauze or a clean cloth to hold it in place.
4 If you can’t put it back, keep it moist: store it in a small container of milk, or hold it inside your cheek. Don’t let it dry out, and don’t store it in water.
5 Get to us within 60 minutes. Every minute counts.

Why the 60-minute window matters

The root of the tooth is covered in living tissue that needs to stay moist and gets damaged quickly once it dries out. The sooner the tooth is back in place, the better the chance it takes hold again. That’s why milk or your own cheek, never water or a dry napkin, is what buys you time on the way in.

What we do when you get here

We try to reimplant the tooth right away. If the tooth isn’t viable, we’ll walk you through replacement options, including a dental implant, so you leave with a clear plan either way. As your emergency dentist in Edmonds, we keep time-critical injuries like this ahead of the regular schedule.

If it’s a child’s tooth

Baby teeth are handled differently. We don’t put a baby tooth back in the socket: doing so can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Still call us right away. We’ll tell you what to watch for and whether the adult tooth underneath needs to be checked.

If you’re not sure whether what happened counts as a true emergency, here’s how to tell.

Common questions

Come in anyway. The odds go down the longer the tooth is out, but it’s still worth having us look at it and clean out the socket.

That’s a different situation with different steps. Handle it gently, save any pieces in milk, and call us the same way.

This can’t wait. Call us.
