Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth removal is common, but it is not automatic. If your wisdom teeth come in straight, have room, and you can clean them well, they can often stay. An exam and X-ray tell us what is actually going on beneath the surface.

We usually recommend removing them when they are causing problems or clearly headed that way:

  • They are impacted, stuck under the gum or bone and unable to come in properly.
  • They are crowding your other teeth or pushing them out of line.
  • They are partly erupted, which leaves a flap of gum that traps food and bacteria and is prone to infection.
  • They are painful, decayed, or hard to clean because of how far back they sit.

Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?

What is recovery like after wisdom teeth removal?

Recovery is usually quicker than people expect. Here is the general shape of it:

The first 24 hours. Rest and let a clot form in each socket. Bite gently on the gauze we send you home with, use ice to keep swelling down, and stick to cool, soft foods.

Days 2 to 3. Swelling and soreness are typically at their peak, then start to ease. Keep eating soft foods and keep the area clean as directed.

The first week. Most people feel close to normal and are back to school or work within a few days, though full healing of the sockets continues for a couple of weeks.

What to avoid. No straws, no smoking, and no vigorous rinsing or spitting for the first several days, since these can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful dry socket. If your pain gets worse around day three or four instead of better, call us and we will help.

Because you may feel groggy or sore right after, plan to take the rest of the day off and arrange for someone to drive you home.
