What’s Included in Your Dental Filling Appointment

Cavity Assessment and Preparation

We’ll numb the area with local anesthesia so you stay comfortable. Using specialized instruments, we’ll carefully remove the decayed portion of your tooth and prepare it for the filling material.

Filling Placement

We’ll apply tooth-colored composite filling material in layers, carefully sculpting it to match your tooth’s natural shape and bite. Each layer is hardened with a special light, ensuring a strong, durable restoration.

Finishing and Polishing

Once the filling is complete, we’ll shape and polish it so it looks natural and feels smooth. You’ll bite down to check your bite, and we’ll make any adjustments needed for perfect comfort.

FAQ

Dental Fillings FAQ

Is the filling procedure painful?

No. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the area. After the anesthesia wears off, your tooth should feel completely normal.

What’s the difference between composite and amalgam fillings?

Composite fillings are tooth-colored, more conservative, and bond directly to your tooth. Amalgam fillings are silver, durable, but more visible. We recommend composite for most patients today.

Can I eat right after my filling?

Wait until the anesthesia wears off completely (about two hours) before eating. Avoid very hot foods for the first 24 hours.

How long does a filling take?

Most fillings take 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the size and location of the cavity.

What if the cavity is deep?

Very deep cavities may require a buildup or core, or even a crown instead of a simple filling. We’ll assess the cavity during your appointment and discuss the best treatment option.

How can I prevent cavities?

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss every day, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and visit us for cleanings and exams every six months.
